Railway Beacon was formed by a group of parents who frequented the Railway Inn in Albert Road Devonport. It was formed in 1982 to provide football for the youth of Morice Town.Dave Dott along with Gerald and Margaret McCaig started the side, then known as Railway Athletic. In their first season of competition the side was runner up in the league and cup finalist’s at under 12 level.these results encouraged them to form a second team the following season.During this early period two trips were made to Europe. The club name was changed to Railway Griffins FC in the mid 1980’s because of it’s close association with the RNAD Griffin Club at Brickfields, during this time Mac McCaig took over as Chairman. The club name was changed again in 1990 to Railway Beacon FC when Beacon Electrical sponsored both teams. The club continued with two teams until the mid 1990’s when John Bradley took over as Chairman from Mac and John’s wife Marilyn took over as Secretary from Mac’s wife Margaret which continued the strong family atmosphere at the club. The philosophy of the club remained the same to give children a purpose and to teach them discipline and respect and to of course enjoy the best game in the world. The expansion of the club came with a lot of hard work from a dedicated committee in the mid 1990’s.Larry Reed with help from coach Kevin Adams continued to raise new teams at under 11 level which saw an increase in the number of teams by one each season eventually rising to 9 teams.During this period husband and wife team of Larry and Brenda Reed took over as the present day Chairman and Secretary respectively. With the introduction of the FA Charter Standard Club scheme Railway Beacon became the first club in West Devon to receive the honour in November 2001,this ensured that all club staff are

CRB checked and all managers and assistants have the FA level 1 coaching badge. This also saw the introduction of the clubs Child Welfare Officer. The club was very proud in 2005 to be able to field it’s own girls team. The club has done well during it’s history winning many league titles, cup competitions and sporting awards. The name of Railway Beacon appeared in the World Cup qualifying game programme England Versus Wales in 2004 at Old Trafford where Chairman Larry Reed was presented with The Charter Standard Administrator of the Year Award presented to him on the pitch at half time by Trevor Brooking and Geoff Hurst. The club continues to go from strength to strength and in 2006 reached the pinnacle in becoming League and Cup double winners of the top DJM League.

Extract from the Official FA Website with regard to Railway Beacon YFC Chairman Larry Reed’s dedication and hard work recognised in the award of FA Charter Standard Adminisrator Of The Year 2004:

Friday, 08 October 2004

Railway Beacon FC's Larry has been instrumental in increasing the size of Railway Beacon Youth FC from two to nine teams and has guided the club to become the first awarded with the FA Charter Standard in

West Devon. Larry’s hard work and commitment to the club and his encouragement towards players to respect the rules and regulations of the game has resulted in an excellent disciplinary record being achieved - only five cautions last season. Larry said he is proud that his achievements have been recognised by The FA. "I am delighted and very surprised to receive the award. I think it’s great that The FA’s Charter Standard scheme rewards the work done by clubs at grass roots so it is nice to be recognised for our effort. "It’s always a team effort at Railway Beacon and I’m sure this award will encourage everyone at the club to develop and improve further."Sir Trevor Brooking, The FA’s Director of Football Development said: "The FA is committed to raising the standards of football at grassroots level and these awards acknowledge the fantastic support that Crosfields JFC is providing within the local community, providing opportunities for players of all abilities to develop their skills and play football in a safe and fun environment." The Charter Standard, supported by FA partner McDonald’s, was established three years ago and aims to improve standards of coaching and player development with a commitment to child protection and a code of conduct for players and parents.Since then, over 1670 clubs representing more than 15,000 teams and over 200,000 players have achieved FA Charter Standard Club status.
